Teledyne Energetics UK has been active in safety, arming and initiation technology since 1984. The activity began with funding Exploding Foil Initiator (EFI) technology in conjunction with RARDE (now QinetiQ and Dstl). This built on the existing high speed switch tube technology already developed at Teledyne.
Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, work was concentrated on EFI initiator research and characterisation, explosive material characterisation and firing circuit development.
Teledyne Energetics UK secured its first product contract for an electronic safety and arming unit (ESAU), including an EFI detonator, in 1994. This contract resulted in qualification of a basic firing system in 1996 and delivery of approximately 1,500 production devices.
Since the mid-1990s, the activity has grown and is now a key part of our future business strategy. Today, we are supplying electronic Safe Arming & Initiation Devices (eSAID) and electronic Ignition Safety devices (eISD) units containing EFI detonators to more than 27 active weapon systems. These include torpedoes, missiles and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) systems both for warhead initiation and rocket motor ignition.
Ongoing technology research into low energy EFIs and next generation electronic
safety and arming systems is securing the Teledynev portfolio for the future.
